Join us on Friday, May 7, 2021 as The Barnacle Society and the Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce present a series of short videos on sustainable seafood by Sereia Films. Bike or walk, or park nearby and stroll over to The Barnacle.
With the gate opening an hour before the videos start at 7:30 p.m. EST, there’s plenty of time to spread out a blanket and enjoy a picnic on the spacious front lawn. All trash must be packed out, and masks and social distancing are required. Chairs are available on a first come, first served basis, or patrons can bring their own. Please leave pets at home.

Eating Out: The Hunt for Sustainable Seafood highlights fisherwomen, scientists, NGO leaders, chefs, and fish farmers and explores fisheries issues. Host Sarah Curry is a marine biologist, environmental journalist, and documentary filmmaker who has produced three award-winning films on seafood. From bycatch to the importance of healthy South Florida ecosystems, Sarah interviews people with unique perspectives to glean a more inclusive understanding of these complex issues. Join her as she hunts for sustainable seafood at restaurants in South Florida that are working to offer better seafood choices.
Episode One: At Books and Books in Coral Gables, Sarah sits down with Rachel Silverstein, Executive Director of Miami Waterkeeper, to discuss seafood and ecosystem health. For Dr. Silverstein, a healthy Biscayne Bay is paramount in healthy fish populations. Rachel and Sarah eat mahi-mahi, two ways.
Episode Two: Chef Allen is a mainstay in Miami’s culinary community and has long been a sustainable seafood advocate. Sarah joins Chef Allen and two other South Florida chefs as they fish for seafood in Biscayne Bay before serving it family style. They hope to encourage conversation in the community on
sustainable seafood with these types of events.
Episode Three: Meet Lauren, a Miami native who is relatively new to spearfishing. Lauren enjoys being underwater, connecting to the ocean, and learning how to catch her own fish. Lauren and Sarah visit Coconut Grove-based seafood market Shore to Door, which strives to offer local caught seafood. It’s not always easy.
Episode Four: Clams have been called the perfect protein – let’s find out why! In this episode, we meet Aaron and the crew at Two Docks Shellfish in South Tampa Bay. We follow them from harvest, through processing, to the delivery of the product at MarVista Dockside Bar and Grill. Clams are low on the food chain, clean the environment, and are nutritious as well! We’re lucky that Florida is a major producer of this delicious seafood.
